LAKE FISH, ANCIENT DESSERTS AND PLENTY OF POLENTA: THE FLAVOURS OF OUR TRADITION

It’s official—you’ve booked your flight and you’re ready to discover the wonders of Lake Como.

Villas, art exhibitions, breathtaking views and… of course, plenty of delicious food.

In this article, we want you to fall in love with the dishes that tell the story of our land and traditions.

Let’s start with the lake and its fruits: delicious fried fish served with boiled rice.

Carpione—fried fish marinated in vinegar, onion, and bay leaf—is a true delicacy.

Another classic is the "fritto misto di lago", one of the most loved and sought-after dishes: a mix of alborelle (bleak), agoni (shad) lightly floured and pan-fried in iron skillets, along with burbot, whitefish, and more.


And what about Missultin? These are agoni, usually caught in May and then dried in the sun, layered between bay leaves.

They’re served with grilled polenta and a glass of red wine—a true local treat.


After exploring the flavours of the lake, we can’t leave out our queen: polenta taragna, made with buckwheat flour and lots of melted butter.

The most famous version is polenta uncia: a rich mix of polenta and cheese, topped with a sizzling blend of butter, garlic, and sage.

In Bellagio, for example, you can order the Piatto dell’Amicizia—the “Friendship Dish”—perfect for sharing with your closest friends.


And it doesn’t end there—have you ever heard of Miascia?

It’s an ancient cake made with stale bread, sugar, eggs, milk, butter, apples or pears, raisins, crumbled amaretti cookies, dark chocolate, and lemon zest.


And don’t forget to try the Misigotta dome-shaped dessert made with white and buckwheat flours, sugar, butter, eggs, raisins, pine nuts, candied orange, and yeast.
